Blog: Privacy

Although new media is used by many people, there are privacy and confidentiality issues that come along with it. There is no true privacy when it comes to using the internet. Whatever is posted online will somehow get passed around by other people. Despite the privacy settings that many new media platforms provide, it is not enough to help people be at complete privacy. In the article "Facebook Privacy Is So Confusing Even the Zuckerberg Family Photo Isn't Private" by Rebecca Greenfield, Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder sister, had her privacy invaded when Vox Media marketing director Callie Schweitzer put on Twitter one of her photos. The photo was meant to be posted online for her friends and family, but it got out to the public (her subscribers). Facebook had confusing privacy settings that led to this mishap. There was another issue with Facebook involving Cambridge Analytica. Facebook gave private information over to Cambridge Analytica on 50 million Facebook users. A reputable platform like this is also subject to violating privacy terms. To counteract future privacy and confidentiality issues, there must be clearer/sophisticated privacy policies in place. The terms and agreements must be transparent to the public and must be true to their words of honoring everyone their privacy. We are moving towards a society in which new media will be the norm. Everyone will be involved with using these new media. It is imperative that privacy and confidentiality issues be enforced.
